Celebrate NHS Day – July 5th.

Support the NHS, Care and Frontline Workers Day

July 5th 2021 marks the 73rd birthday of the NHS. To celebrate this we are calling upon the shops and businesses, and indeed people of Henley, to join us in recognising the wonderful efforts and sacrifices that people have given in these services over the past 73 years, and in the last year in particular.

This is a Nationwide celebration and towns and villages throughout the UK will be doing the same in a variety of ways, such as bell ringing, 2 minutes silence, flag flying and tea parties to name but a few.

The Henley Freemasons will be visiting shops and businesses in Henley this week, distributing posters in support, kindly provided by The Henley Standard. If you do not have one and would like one please get in touch.

11a.m. – 2 Minute silence

Here in Henley we will be holding a 2 minute silence at 11 am led by bugler Roo Shanagher playing the Last Post in Market Place. It is a day to celebrate, but let’s pause for two minutes to remember the men and women from the NHS, social care and other key services who have given their lives in the service of others. There will also be a gazebo in Market Place where people will be invited to place a token in a jar, each jar representing one of three local NHS related charities to help us distribute up to £2000 that we have collected.

1p.m. – Nation’s Toast to the NHS

At 1PM we invite you to raise a glass in The Nation’s Toast to the heroes of the NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers. The toast will be : “To those who give so much, 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the NHS, social care and on the front line, we thank and salute you.” We’d particularly like those pubs and cafe’s that are open to participate.

All day from 10a.m. until 4p.m.

There will also be a gazebo in Market Place where people will be invited to place a token in a jar, each jar representing one of three local NHS related charities to help the Henley Freemasons distribute up to £2000 that they have collected, so it won’t cost you a thing!

The three local charities the Henley Freemasons have chosen to support are:

Fish Volunteer Centre

The FISH Volunteer Centre is run by volunteers providing a range of support services and community transport for those who are elderly, infirm or disabled within Sonning Common and all the surrounding villages

Henley Volunteer Drivers

Henley Volunteer Bureau has 35 active drivers and over 250 patients, the majority of whom are elderly and disadvantaged, and who need assistance in getting to medical appointments. The HVD drivers are also good listeners, and provide excellent companionship too.

Friends of Townlands Hospital
The Friends fundraise to provide extra amenities for outpatients, enabling specialist medical equipment to be purchased which will augment the provision of “one stop shop” services at our local Hospital.

Part of the stand will also be allocated to Teddies for Loving Care, an organisation that has donated over a million Teddy Bears to children who are patients in hospitals as a way of providing comfort in their distress. See this website for more information and ways to donate to this truly worthwhile cause: https://teddiesforlovingcare.org.uk/

8 p.m. Clapping our heroes

Let’s hit the streets one more on July 5th 2021 to show our appreciation of our NHS and front line heroes by clapping like crazy.

DONATE TO NHS CHARITIES TOGETHER

The main charity of the day is the NHS Charities Together. NHS Charities Together is the national charity caring for the NHS. They are the national charity partner of the NHS and are made up of 240 NHS charity members based with hospitals, mental health, ambulance and community health services across the UK. A donation to just one place helps all the different charities supported.
